Meta decides to discontinue its generative AI tools in Brazil

Meta Platforms announced its decision to stop deploying generative artificial intelligence tools in Brazil, responding to government objections to its new privacy policy on personal data and AI.

Brazil, with over 200 million inhabitants, represents a crucial market for Meta, especially since the country has the second largest user base for WhatsApp after India.

In June, Meta launched its first AI-powered ad targeting program in Sao Paulo for companies using its popular chat service.

Earlier this month, Brazil’s Data Protection Agency (ANPD) suspended Meta’s new privacy policy, which specifically addressed the use of personal data for training generative AI systems in the country. The ANPD ordered adjustments to Meta’s policy to exclude this aspect.

Meta said it had suspended the AI tools while it held talks with the ANPD to address concerns about generative artificial intelligence.
