A prominent Boston lawyer who was found guilty of rape after being acquitted of similar charges in three other cases is scheduled to be sentenced Monday. A Suffolk Superior Court jury in June found Gary Zerola, 52, of Salem, guilty of raping a then-21-year-old just over three years ago. Investigators said in January 2021 that Zerola paid for a night of drinking with a woman he was dating and the woman’s 21-year-old friend. A prominent Boston lawyer has been found guilty of rape after being acquitted of similar charges in three other cases. The verdict is expected to be announced on Monday.

A Suffolk Superior Court jury in June found 52-year-old Gary Zerola of Salem guilty of raping a then 21-year-old woman just over three years ago.

Investigators said in January 2021, Zerola paid for a night of drinking with a woman he was dating and the woman’s 21-year-old friend. The friend became intoxicated and had to be taken back to her Beacon Hill apartment. Zerola later entered the apartment without permission and began having sexual intercourse with the friend while she was sleeping.

Zerola, once listed as one of People magazine’s most eligible bachelors, had previously been acquitted in three other rape trials – in 2008, 2016 and 2023 – and several other cases against him were dismissed.

Zerola was acquitted of charges of aggravated rape and burglary in that case.

He faces up to 20 years in prison.
