(KRON) — A man who police say attacked two children on their way to school last month has been arrested and charged with attempted aggravated sexual assault of a child, according to Fairfield police. Between 8:30 and 9 a.m. on June 5, two 12-year-olds – a boy and a girl – were walking to school on a bike path between Meadowlark Drive and East Tabor Avenue when they were approached by a man on a BMX bike.

According to police, the children bravely fought off the man, identified as 30-year-old Carlos Guadalupe DeLosReyes of Fairfield. When the children arrived at the school, they reported the incident.

Detectives from the Fairfield Police Department’s Special Victims Unit were assigned to the investigation. They conducted numerous interviews and reviewed dozens of hours of surveillance footage.

These efforts led them to DeLosReyes and an arrest warrant was obtained.

He was located by Fairfield PD SWAT officers on July 3. He was taken into custody and booked into the Solano County Jail. He was charged with the following crimes, among others:

  • Kidnapping for the purpose of rape
  • Attempted serious sexual abuse of a child
  • Lewd or lascivious acts with a child
  • Bodily harm with the intent to commit rape
  • Criminal threats
  • Deprivation of liberty
  • Child abuse can cause serious bodily harm

“We are incredibly proud of the behavior of these two children,” Fairfield police said at the time of the first incident.
