Bomb disposal squad called after ‘suspicious’ package found following shooting in Northwich

Police had to call in bomb disposal services to investigate the Northwich shooting incident after a “suspicious” package was found on a property.

Armed officers responded to Burgess Place in Castle shortly after 2pm yesterday (Monday 8 July) following concerns about the welfare of a man.

A cordon was set up on the street because officers were seen surrounding an address.

Police confirmed that weapons were fired while dealing with the incident, with residents reporting that officers “fired several shots in the direction of the house.”

No serious injuries were reported in the incident, but a 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear or violence. A firearm was also seized.

Officers remained on site all night and maintained the cordon until they made a search of the address at around 1.15pm today.

Before the bomb disposal officials confirmed that the package was harmless, the residents were evacuated as a precaution.

A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said: “At around 1.15pm on Tuesday 9 July, officers searched an address in Burgess Place, Northwich following a previous incident at that address and discovered a suspicious package.

“A cordon has been set up and a small number of nearby residents have been evacuated as a precaution.

“EOD was present and has since confirmed that the package was unusable.”

Deputy Chief Constable Una Kelly added: “We understand the concern this incident is likely to cause but would like to reassure local residents that this is an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public.”

“I would strongly encourage anyone who has any concerns to speak to an officer.”
