25-year-old man arrested for allegedly throwing bricks at moving cars

A 25-year-old man was arrested Monday morning after allegedly throwing a brick through the driver’s side window of a 45-year-old woman driving on Kamehameha Highway in Pearl City near the Waiau Generating Station, law enforcement sources said.

At 6:48 a.m., the woman was driving east while the suspect was crossing the street. Police received several 911 calls about a man throwing bricks at cars, hitting several of them.

As the victim walked past him, he allegedly threw a brick through the driver’s side window. The brick shattered the window and shards of glass struck the woman’s face, hand and wrist, causing minor injuries.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services technicians responded and treated the woman for abrasions to her right wrist and bruising on the back of her hand.

She refused to be taken to the emergency room.

The suspect fled on foot but was tracked down by Honolulu Police Department patrol officers and arrested at 7:19 a.m. on suspicion of first-degree criminal damage to property.

The suspect, Isaiah Keakua Mersburgh, has been arrested four times for fourth-degree criminal damage, once for abuse of a household member and twice on suspicion of third-degree assault.

According to state court records, he still has court dates pending in an abuse and assault case, as well as applications for temporary restraining orders.

On June 7, he was charged in connection with two assaults on June 5 and 6 in which he “intentionally, knowingly or negligently inflicted bodily injury, bodily pain and/or other impairment of her physical condition” on his mother.

He was sentenced to one year of probation, required to attend anger management classes and had 12 days of his time credited, state court records show.

In a June 7 motion for a temporary restraining order, Mersburgh’s mother wrote that he called her profanities and grabbed her from behind and put her in a chokehold on June 5 because he wanted his phone back.

On June 6, Mersburgh allegedly became angry and punched his mother three times in the stomach, the petition states. She ran out of the house and Mersburgh allegedly chased her with a broom.

When the woman returned home, she allegedly found her house trashed, and Mersburgh had allegedly destroyed her iPad and other personal items. Mersburgh allegedly yelled at his father to open the gun safe in the house so he could “get a gun to hurt me with,” his mother wrote.

Mersburgh’s mother said she was trying to get her son psychiatric care and other mental health and social services. The judge granted the order, but the mother withdrew it ten days later.

On June 26, Mersburgh was arrested on suspicion of criminal possession and arraigned the next day.

Mersburgh allegedly “intentionally or knowingly caused damage to property of Queen’s Medical Center by means other than fire on June 26, without the consent of Queen’s Medical Center, in the amount of over $500.00.”

His court date in this case is set for July 17.

On Friday, Mersburgh’s girlfriend, with whom he had been together for two years, obtained a restraining order against him.

She accused Mersburgh of stalking her, her family and her new boyfriend by showing up at her home, blocking her driveway and playing loud music. He also allegedly sent her text messages expressing a desire to attack her friends and family and pictures showing him in her garage.

“The family owns guns,” wrote Mersburgh’s ex-girlfriend. “Also knows many people who can legally or illegally obtain firearms or weapons.”
