Ritter died Thursday after being shot in Cleveland’s Hough neighborhood. Authorities said he and other officers were searching a suburban area for a suspect wanted for aggravated assault.

“Officers arrived on scene and attempted to make contact with the man,” Cleveland Police Chief Annie Todd told reporters hours after the incident. “The man exited the home and attempted to leave the area on a bicycle. Officers attempted to detain the man when he pulled out a firearm and began firing multiple times.”

The man suspected of killing Ritter has been identified as 24-year-old De’Lawnte Hardy, who prosecutors say shot his grandmother with her gun in Garfield Heights last week. He now faces aggravated murder charges in connection with Ritter’s death and is being held in the Cuyahoga County Jail on $5 million bail.

In addition to the memorial service, some of Ritter’s colleagues held a memorial run near the Greater Cleveland Peace Officers Memorial on Saturday morning.
