Why a Shaun of the Dead reboot would ‘anger’ Simon Pegg

Before Simon Pegg became Tom Cruise’s right-hand man in “Mission Impossible,” he was known for his British comedy hits.

“Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz,” and “The World’s End” are also known as “The Three-Flavor Cornetto Trilogy” due to the repeated references to the ice cream.

And as with any cult classic, there are calls for sequels and remakes, especially as Shaun of the Dead celebrates its twentieth anniversary this year.

But Pegg, who co-wrote the film’s screenplay with director Edgar Wright, said the couple were “furious.”

The actor told the Hollywood Reporter that the zombie comedy “Shaun of the Dead” is an “incredibly personal” film.

“There is so much of us in this film,” he added.

“The whole thing with Shaun’s mother, the stepfather, I had a difficult relationship with my stepfather. It was Edgar’s idea to kill the mother. I couldn’t believe it when he said that, but it was the best decision. There’s so much of our own heart and soul in this film.

“If someone were to do a reboot, it would be a cynical and exploitative move. I would hope that people love our Shaun so much that they would resist a reboot.”

The film is part of the Cornetto trilogy (Universal Pictures).

Pegg said he was annoyed by Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake, even though it was a “great movie.”

“I hated the fact that they called it Dawn of the Dead because that was George Romero’s movie. They could have called it Deadish, which was a great line from one of the actors in the movie, and it still would have been a great movie, but to take a title just because people know it is so disrespectful to the original,” he added.

The actor also seemed to rule out a sequel to “Shaun of the Dead” because there was simply “no story to tell” and “some stories end.”

“If you saw Shaun again, if the zombies came back, there would simply be no story to tell.”

But the creative partnership between Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright continues. Pegg says there is “always something in the works.”

However, Pegg admits that it is unlikely that they will collaborate in the near future: “We are both busy in the distant future as well. The biggest challenge for us right now is to find a moment where we can come together and have six, seven weeks to finish our first draft and develop the idea.”

“But we’re always looking for it. Edgar came to my house last year and stayed for the week and we just talked about films and what we wanted to do next.

“We just need the time to do it. So it’s really a question of when, not if.”
