One Israeli soldier was killed and another seriously injured in a military attack in Jenin in the north of the occupied West Bank, the Israeli military said.

According to local residents, Israeli forces raided a pharmacy outside the gates of the Jenin refugee camp overnight and arrested people. Armored bulldozers damaged the surrounding infrastructure, they say.

Israeli media reports that several Israeli soldiers in an armored vehicle were injured by a roadside bomb as they left Jenin. As more troops arrived to help them, another bomb exploded, killing the soldier.

The armed group Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) claimed to have detonated the bombs.

Since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, which was triggered by Hamas’ deadly attack on southern Israel on October 7, there has been an escalation of violence in the West Bank.

As of Monday, 536 Palestinians – members of armed groups, attackers and civilians – had been killed in conflict-related incidents in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, according to the UN. At least 519 were killed by Israeli forces and 10 by Israeli settlers, it said.

During the same period, according to the UN, twelve Israelis were killed in the West Bank, including eight members of the security forces. Another eight Israelis were killed in attacks by Palestinians from the West Bank.

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Association announced on Thursday morning that at least 28 Palestinians – including nine from Jenin province – had been arrested across the West Bank in recent days, bringing the total number of arrests since October to 9,430.

There have been regular Israeli attacks in Jenin, with the military previously saying it was targeting Hamas and PIJ members.

On Saturday, the military said its forces had violated protocol by strapping a wounded Palestinian to the front of their jeep during operations in Jenin.
