Relatives of a 4-month-old baby who was attacked by a dog speak out

On Sunday, WDSU reported on a four-month-old baby attacked by a dog in Bridge City. On Wednesday, WDSU spoke with the baby’s relatives, who described how the horrific attack occurred. Rodney Pickett, a relative of the baby, told WDSU that the baby is still at Children’s Hospital recovering from serious injuries, including brain damage, sustained in the attack. “To see something like that happen to a four-month-old, I hope I never have to experience that,” Pickett said. Pickett said he was there when one of his family’s exotic bulldogs attacked the baby. “I was sitting on the couch and Xavier had brought the baby in because they were planning on going somewhere. He put the baby on the floor,” Pickett said. He said the dog started acting friendly with the baby and then the unthinkable happened. “She licked his feet and everything was fine until Xavier picked the baby up and took him outside. The dog lunged at the baby’s face. “I just saw blood coming out of the baby’s head and a big hole in it, so I ran out screaming and called 911,” Pickett said.He said first responders took a while to arrive, so the baby’s mother ran to the nearest fire station and got help while neighbors rushed to help. “Given how bad the injuries were, it was already a really traumatic situation. I don’t think even if they had been there earlier, they could have prevented something like this from happening,” Pickett said.Pickett said the baby suffered brain damage and is fighting for his life. He is thankful the baby is still alive. Now, Pickett is sending a message to anyone thinking about keeping dogs around young children. “No matter what animal someone has, they should be careful with their baby and not let them near animals. I don’t care how cute the animal is, they shouldn’t leave the baby near an animal,” Pickett said.Pickett said the dog reportedly had no violent past, despite neighbors claiming otherwise. However, the dog was euthanized after that attack.

Rodney Pickett, a relative of the baby, told WDSU that the baby is still at Children’s Hospital and is recovering from serious injuries, including brain damage, as a result of the attack.

“I hope no one ever has to witness what happens to a four-month-old child,” Pickett said.

He said it took a while for emergency responders to arrive, so the baby’s mother ran to the nearest fire station for help while neighbors rushed to help.

“It was already a really traumatic situation given the extent of the damage. I don’t think even if they had been there earlier, they could have prevented something like this from happening,” Pickett said.
