Chattanooga shooting update: Insights into the investigation

Chattanooga police have identified the suspect in yesterday’s shooting at an office building near Hamilton Place Mall.

Investigators said 67-year-old John Schultz opened fire Tuesday afternoon in an office building about 2,000 blocks away on Hamilton Place Boulevard. Police said Schultz was an employee of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Air Pollution Control Office.

Callers reported that an armed man was firing shots inside the building. When police arrived, they found a person matching the witnesses’ descriptions, but suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Witnesses reported that Schultz pointed a gun at several employees and fired. They were able to flee when the weapon malfunctioned.

Police believe Schultz then pulled out a second gun and shot himself.
