Murder investigation underway in Clackamas apartment complex

PORTLAND, Oregon – The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a homicide at an apartment complex near Mount Talbert Nature Park after a man was killed in an incident early Saturday morning.

At approximately 12:49 a.m. Saturday, the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple reports of a person “calling for help” outside the Crown Court Apartments on Southeast 97th Avenue.

When officers arrived, they saw a passerby administering first aid to a man. Although officers assisted with life-saving measures, the man died at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.

On Monday, the sheriff’s office identified the man as 30-year-old Jefferson Smith Cates. The Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death a homicide. The cause of death has not yet been released. No arrests have been made.
