British Airways suspends two employees for insulting a stewardess about her obesity in a WhatsApp group

Two members of British Airways cabin crew were suspended for criticizing a colleague for being obese in a staff group chat.

The mocked stewardess was reportedly shown hurtful messages about her 100kg weight sent to a staff WhatsApp group she was not a part of.

A concerned colleague encouraged the unidentified woman in her 20s from Wiltshire to report the incident to British Airways bosses after she became “terrified” of going to work.

The cabin crew members who allegedly made the cruel comments were immediately suspended and removed from their duty rosters until the incident was investigated.

Some services were therefore flown with a smaller crew than usual.

“The poor victim of the merciless fat jokes is completely abandoned,” said a source The sun.

“She had no idea that her colleagues despised her so much. The cruel comments made her afraid to leave the house. She felt bullied. This was disgusting bullying.”

If the investigation finds the two guilty of misconduct, they will be fired from their jobs at the airline.

Five other BA employees involved in the group chat are also believed to be under surveillance because of their behavior.

A British Airways spokesman said: “We have a zero-tolerance approach to bullying and always fully investigate all allegations brought to our attention.”

According to the British Airways website, cabin crew must pass a functional test to be allowed to work for the airline.

This specifies that employees must be between 5’10” and 6’7″ tall to have a “vertical reach of at least 6’7”. However, it does not set a maximum weight limit for employees as long as they pass this and a diagonal reach test.

In March, two British Airways flight attendants were fired after posting a racist video on their Instagram stories in which they “impersonated Asian passengers.”

In a screenshot posted by @jadenguyen_2 on TikTok, Holly Walton was filmed by Lauren Bray saying “Give me wine” with slanted eyes and a Chinese accent.

The two were fired earlier this year. Ms Walton was reportedly called back from a business trip to Cancun to meet with airline executives. Bray was seen in tears after the meeting.
