“Unfortunately, 11 people have died so far – 11 adults and 3 minors. They died on Friday the 14th. As we said at the time, the first two deaths occurred in an area where sand was being removed and they approached a slope, as I said, and it fell on them. Unfortunately, the first person died instantly. The other person was rescued and received assistance, but unfortunately died later.”

The rains have drenched much of the Pacific coast from southern Mexico to western Panama. Meteorologists have forecast more rains for the coming week and warned that they could be exacerbated by a storm expected to form soon over the Gulf of Mexico.

Hurricane season has begun in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. A particularly strong hurricane season is predicted in the Atlantic due to a combination of the effects of the La Niña weather phenomenon and warmer ocean waters.
