Man was attacked and attempted to murder Klickitat deputy with hammer, sheriff’s office says

A man was arrested after he allegedly tried to murder a Klickitat County deputy with a hammer during a psychotic episode, the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office reported May 6.

According to the KCSO, two officers were dispatched to a mobile home park in Dallesport around 7 a.m. after the suspect’s mother called to report that her son was suffering from a psychotic episode.

According to the agency, one of the officers was talking to the mother outside her trailer when her son, identified as Christian Smith, ran out of the trailer and hit the officer in the head with a hammer.

A KCSO sergeant arrived at the scene after hearing screaming on the radio and found the two officers on the ground fighting with Smith. He helped officers subdue Smith and take him into custody.

According to KCSO, the officer hit with the hammer suffered serious head injuries and was treated at the hospital. He has now been released and is recovering with his family.

Smith is being held in the Klickitat County Jail on a charge of attempted first-degree murder.
