Nearly a month after this devastating derecho, a number of streets and sidewalks in downtown Houston are still closed to repair damaged buildings. At least eight people died on May 16th storm. Windows in several downtown buildings were broken, among other storm debris that in some cases is still being replaced.

Despite this, there have long been efforts to entice Houstonians to visit downtown for shopping, dining and entertainment. But like everything, it could be better.

That’s where we turned to your fellow Houstonians: In the audio above, we ask how downtown Houston could be more of a destination than it currently is? If you could be really creative, even if you had to start from scratch, what would you like to see in the space we call downtown Houston that doesn’t currently exist? (Want to share your ideas, email us at [email protected]).

We discuss listener ideas with Kris Larson, President and CEO of Downtown Houston Plus, Kirby Liu, Principal of Lovett Commercial and developer of POST Houston (the redevelopment of the historic Barbara Jordan Post Office downtown), and Michael Heckman, president and CEO of Houston First, which markets Houston and manages the locations.

MORE: In the conversation below, we discuss the state of commercial real estate in the Houston area, including downtown, with George Farish and Trammell Crow.
