Teenager charged in knife attack in Charlotte, North Carolina

CHARLOTTE, NC — A 19-year-old man was wanted after Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said he attacked a woman with a knife Wednesday night. He was arrested less than a day later.

Officials said Josiah Maitland attacked the woman as she left work at the intersection of Randolph Road and Sam Drennan Road in southeast Charlotte around 6 p.m. He then fled the area.

The victim did not know Maitland. Police considered him armed and dangerous because they thought he might still have the knife on him.

CMPD issued an alert about him shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday, but later announced around 2:30 p.m. that Maitland had been arrested.

Note: WCNC adopted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or publication of mug shots.

WCNC will only broadcast or publish a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in some other cases. Exceptions include: When it appears the person may pose a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to distinguish between people who share a common name; when the photos might encourage more victims to come forward. Newsroom management may also choose to use a mugshot depending on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and the subsequent criminal proceedings.
