Texas man dies after electrocution in hot tub at Mexico resort

A 43-year-old man has died after allegedly suffering an electric shock in a hot tub in Mexico.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 11, at around 8:30 p.m. local time in a complex of private condominiums in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, according to a translated statement shared on Facebook by the Sonora State Attorney General’s Office.

The statement identified the man as Jorge “N” and said he was in the hot tub with Lizeth “N.” The statement added that the man died and the woman suffered injuries from a “possible electrical discharge.”

An investigation is underway and authorities are now trying to “determine the cause of the power outage,” the statement said.

According to stations such as KTSM, NBC News and CBS4, the man was from El Paso, Texas.

CBS4 said family members confirmed the couple involved in the incident were Jorge Guillen and Lizette Zambrano. According to the source, Zambrano, 35, remains in critical condition and is being treated at the hospital. She has since been transported to the United States, according to KTSM.

According to the publication, the incident occurred at the Sonoran Sea Resort. The resort did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

According to KTSM, a witness told authorities she tried to help the couple into the hot tub but suffered a shock while trying to get into the water.

Nurse Sara Gaitan-Perez of Goodyear, Arizona, was at the resort at the time of the incident, according to Arizona Daily StarThe outlet stated that Gaitan-Perez said the couple were the only two people in the hot tub when the shock occurred.

“We had just gotten out of the pool and my husband and son had been in that very same (hot tub) about an hour earlier,” the nurse who performed CPR on the couple told the outlet.

“The woman was eventually responsive and breathing on her own as she was being transported on a stretcher to the ambulance,” Gaitan-Perez added, according to the publication.
