Professional footballer banned for four matches for refusing to support LGBT campaign in Ligue 1 match – ZENIT

(ZENIT News – IFN / Monaco, 06.03.2024).- Monegasque midfielder Mohamed Camara has been banned for four matches by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) for covering an LGBT patch on his uniform during a match on May 19. In addition to covering the “homophobia” badge on his jersey with tape, Camara reportedly also refrained from taking a pre-match group photo that featured a banner with a similar message against “homophobia.”

The incident prompted French Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra to call on the league to act quickly and impose sanctions against the player. The Malian Football Federation, on the other hand, stood behind Camara and stressed that the fundamental rights of players must be protected.

While Monaco coach Adi Hutter confirmed the club’s support for the league’s initiative against “homophobia,” he described Camara’s actions as a personal initiative. Details of the player’s actions were withheld, but Hutter promised an internal discussion about the incident.
