Young girl may have witnessed a fatal domestic incident

On Tuesday, Harley James Jeffries appeared in Armadale Local Court charged with the murder of his mother in the Perth suburb of Byford.

He appeared in court behind security glass, wearing a blue paper prison suit, handcuffed and accompanied by two security guards.

His dramatic arrest came on Sunday, about two hours after police responded to an emergency call that a woman had been seriously injured.

The 61-year-old was found dead by emergency services arriving at the scene of the accident.

Prime Minister Roger Cook told reporters that a young girl witnessed the alleged attack.

“The young girl who apparently witnessed this event at the time must be incredibly traumatized by what she saw,” he said.

“I am extremely happy and once again extremely proud of our police, who managed to arrest someone.

“This family has our sympathy.”

Police arrested Mr Jeffries 200 kilometres from the crime scene.

Police will allege in court that Mr Jeffries fled the scene in a silver Peugeot estate car and was not seen by police until 9.15pm, 200 kilometres north of the crime scene in the rural town of Moora.

A Western Australian Police spokeswoman claimed the man did not stop after the hazard lights and siren were activated.

The man was stopped in the town of Bindi Bindi – 40km east of Moora – when police deployed a tire-deflating device on the Great Northern Highway.

After Mr Jeffries allegedly began behaving aggressively and challenging police, tasers were deployed.

He was not required to enter a plea and was remanded in custody to appear before Stirling Gardens Local Court on July 24.
