You Could Have Debris From Storm Derecho All Summer and City of Houston Delays Launch of Cleanup Tracking System

HOUSTON – Some of us who weathered the May 16 Derecho storm may have debris on the sidewalk all summer.

“Debris removal efforts are expected to last two to three months, and solid waste management employees are working daily to remove debris,” Public Information Officer Rene Schwartz told KPRC 2.

The City of Houston’s Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) also delayed the release of a new tool designed to help residents track the progress of cleaning up storm-related debris. Tracking storm debris collection progress was intended to allow Houstonians to monitor daily debris collection efforts following the devastating Derecho.

The City of Houston is currently working to verify the data uploaded to the map to ensure it provides accurate and up-to-date information. An updated announcement is expected later this week.

“It is estimated that approximately one million cubic yards of residential debris were generated by the unprecedented Derecho storm,” Schwartz said.

The tool will be updated each evening once available and the map displays the areas where collections have taken place, where teams are currently working and where collections are scheduled for the next two days. Additionally, residents will have the option to enter their address into the toolbar provided to determine their approximate collection schedule. Residents can return to the site at their convenience to get the latest updates on the city’s debris removal efforts.

SWMD encourages residents in affected areas to report any debris removal needs to Houston 311 or call 3-1-1,

You can find the tool here once it goes live.
