1 injured, 5 arrested in shooting in metropolitan Detroit: MSP

MELVINDALE, MI — One man was injured and five other people were arrested in connection with a police shooting in Melvindale early Sunday morning, according to Michigan State Police.

According to police, officers discovered a car stolen in Sterling Heights on Schaefer Road near Interstate 75 at 12:45 a.m. Sunday.

When police tried to stop the car, the driver sped off and collided head-on with one of the patrol cars, police said.

According to police, there were six people in the car that was reported stolen, one of whom had a weapon.

After the accident, police fired shots, hitting a 21-year-old man who was taken to a nearby hospital and underwent surgery, police said.

All of the suspected thieves then ran out of the stolen car and officers quickly arrested five people, including two adults and three minors, police said.

Police believe the suspected thieves broke into vehicles in a storage unit for Ford and GM vehicles.

According to police, no police officers or anyone else was injured in the accident or shooting.

Police did not release any further details about the shooting, including how many shots were fired or how many officers fired shots.

Police are still investigating the shooting and will forward their findings to prosecutors.
