Police officer, civilian killed, 4 others injured in shooting on reservation in Arizona: police

Another officer was also beaten and taken to hospital, police said.

A police officer and a civilian were killed and another police officer and three other people were injured in a shooting in the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona early Saturday morning, police said.

According to Gila River police, officers responded to an incident involving a large crowd outside a home in Santan, the municipality’s District 4, around 2 a.m. local time when multiple shots were fired when several people were shot.

A total of six people were shot in the incident, including police officer Joshua Briese, who died of his injuries in hospital, police said. Briese had only been with the police for less than a year and was still in field training.

An unidentified person who was shot was also pronounced dead at the scene, police said. An unidentified officer was hit and is in serious but stable condition at the hospital, police said.

The three other civilians who were shot were also recovering in hospital, police said.

According to investigators, no suspects were named and no arrests were made as of Saturday evening.

The investigation into the shooting, in which the FBI is now involved, is ongoing.

Braise’s father was also a police officer and died in a car accident while on duty in 2006, ABC affiliate KNXV reported.

Gale River Indian Community Governor Stephen Roe Lewis expressed his condolences to the victims.

“I know I speak for our entire community when I say we mourn our fallen and injured police officers and every community member affected by such tragic violence. Nothing hurts more deeply than a life ending prematurely. We will pray for our police officers and their families and for every community member, loved one and family affected by what happened this morning,” he said in a statement.
