After attack on Thana, minority families flee Karnataka city | News from India

DAVANAGERE: Around 200 families from minority communities have reportedly fled their homes in Channagiri town in Davanagere district of Karnataka and nearby villages after police asked some of their relatives to help identify those involved in an attack on the local police station on May 24.

Nearly a dozen policemen were injured and eight vehicles damaged in stone-pelting after a mob attacked the Channagiri police station to protest against the alleged death of 30-year-old Adil in custody. Thirty people have been arrested so far over the violence.

“At least 100 houses of minority communities in Honnebagi village have been cordoned off. Another 60 families in Nallur and 40 families in Agarabannihatti have also left their homes. Most of the commercial establishments in Channagiri town, such as bakeries and auto repair shops, have been closed since last week,” a source said.

The Siddaramaiah-led Congress government has handed over the investigation to the CID. Earlier, state Home Minister G Parameshwara visited Channagiri PS and ordered the arrest of those involved in the violence.

Police have identified 108 people. The details of 55 of them were ascertained through video footage. Davanagere ASP Vijaykumar Santosh said, “Members of the minority community have shared details of some troublemakers.”
