Tyson Fury suspended from boxing after defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia | Wales Online

Tyson Fury has been banned from boxing for a week following his loss to Oleksandr Usyk last weekend.

Fury lost the undisputed heavyweight world championship fight on points to his opponent in Saudi Arabia. The United Arab Emirates Boxing Commission, which oversaw the fight, informed Fury he is barred from competing until this weekend, while Usyk’s ban lasts until June 2, following his post-fight medical.

After the fight, Fury expressed his desire for a rematch against Usyk, which is scheduled to take place in Riyadh in October. His promoter Frank Warren has hinted that the second fight will be officially announced soon.

Warren, the Queensbury promoter, said a follow-up fight between the two boxers would be confirmed shortly, promising an even more exciting clash than their most recent encounter. At the unveiling of Queensbury’s Magnificent Seven card set on July 20, Warren told the PA news agency: “There will be a rematch and that will be confirmed and announced in due course.”

He added: “I think it will be better than the original fight. They both know each other, they have shared the ring and they will try to use what they gained from the fight as an advantage to beat their opponent.”

Usyk handed Fury his first loss as a professional, but promoter Frank Warren insists the ‘Gypsy King’ already has a boxing career behind him and a win over Usyk, who has an unbeaten record of 22 wins, would cement that status.

“I think his legacy is there,” Warren commented. “Obviously he wants to win and he needs to win. He’s just asking for the rematch because he believes he can win. He believes in himself and it would cement his legacy.”

“Everyone out there thinks Usyk is the best, so let’s see what Tyson does. He called me and said he wanted the rematch, so here we are.”

Warren, who has been with Fury since his comeback in 2018, is confident his fighter will come out on top in the rematch.

Warren explained why he believes Fury will emerge victorious from the fight: “He’s a fighter, it depends on what he brings to the ring. He’s been caught a few times in his last fights, but he gets up and shows what he’s made of. I don’t want that to happen.”

“But he’s very similar to Usyk, they’re very nice guys who know boxing and I have confidence in Tyson. This fight has taken a lot out of both of them, so we’ll see.”
