Buffalo man arrested in connection with fatal shooting, stabbing just hours apart

Emanuel Stokes, 28, of Buffalo, is accused of murder and assault.

BUFFALO, NY – An arrest has been made in connection with a gunshot death and a subsequent stabbing, both of which occurred in the City of Buffalo on May 12.

Emanuel Stokes, 28, of Buffalo, is charged with one felony count of murder and one felony count of assault.

Buffalo police said Wednesday that the first incident involving Stokes occurred in the early hours of Sunday, May 12. At that time, at around 12:40 a.m., the Erie County Medical Center notified 911 that a shooting victim had been taken to the hospital in a private vehicle.

That person, 34-year-old Nicholas Calhoun of Buffalo, was pronounced dead at ECMC.

Police determined the shooting occurred near Kehr and Urban streets, northeast of MLK Park.

Hours later, around 2:30 a.m., a 15-year-old boy was stabbed in the 200 block of Mills Street, near Fillmore Avenue and Sycamore Street. The boy, who police say knew his attacker, was taken to Oishei Children’s Hospital for treatment.

Buffalo police said homicide detectives eventually linked the same suspect to both crime scenes.

A search of the New York State Electric Court records system revealed that Stokes was arrested Tuesday and appeared in court Wednesday morning.
