Man was seen “soaked in blood” and neighbors “so scared” after attack

A man covered in blood was seen on the street after being “violently and frighteningly attacked” by two men with a machete.

Emergency services were called to Brownlow Hill, in the heart of Liverpool’s student area, shortly after 3pm today, May 20, following reports of a knife attack and an attempted robbery.

The victim – a man in his mid-20s, according to witness statements – was reportedly mountain biking in the area when he was attacked with a machete by two men on an electric motorcycle. The men tried to steal his bike.

The alleged attackers then rode toward Grove Street and were last seen on Mason Street. The man was taken to hospital with multiple stab wounds which are currently being investigated.

When the ECHO arrived on scene there was a large cordon and several houses opposite the John Lennon Art and Design Building, part of Liverpool John Moores University, were cordoned off. Bloodstains could be seen on the sidewalk in front of the houses.

There was great disbelief and horror among neighbors over the incident. A woman who lives with her daughter in a nearby house was overcome with emotion as she told us what she had seen. She said: “I looked outside and there was a young man just covered in blood and soaked. He looked like he had been stabbed in the shoulder. I was so scared, so scared. I still can’t believe it.” She said the scene was chaotic and vehicles driving by were honking.

Another woman, who was walking with her family, told the ECHO she was horrified by what happened. She said: “We have lived here for years. I really can’t believe it. It’s a really nice, wealthy place with lots of children and students. It is shocking.”

Investigations are currently underway in the area as officers carry out CCTV, house-to-house interviews and forensic examinations.

Chief Inspector Gillian Kearns, of Merseyside Police, said: “We are in the early stages of investigating a violent and horrific attack on a young man who was attacked and seriously injured after two offenders attempted to steal his bike.”

“If you were on Brownlow Hill or Duckinfield Street this afternoon and saw the attack or these two suspects on an electric motorcycle, please contact us.

“Even if you saw the perpetrators on Grove Street or Mason Street, please contact us immediately so we can find those responsible.

“Last week our officers continued their work tackling knife crime through law enforcement, prevention and education as part of Sceptre, the national knife crime awareness campaign.

“Merseyside Police is committed to preventing serious violence to reduce its devastating impact on individuals, families and the wider community.

“Uniformed officers are regularly deployed across Merseyside to deter offenders and provide reassurance to the local community, with a focus on troubled areas where crime is most likely. More than 3,000 hours of targeted uniformed foot patrols helped curb serious violence last year.

“Information from our community is also critical if we are to stop such violent crimes that instill fear in our communities.”
