San Diego police shoot suspect with baby near Chollas View light rail stop – NBC 7 San Diego

A man who left his ex-girlfriend’s house late Sunday with a little girl was later shot and killed by San Diego police near an MTS trolley stop in Chollas View, investigators said Monday.

The incident began before 11 p.m. Sunday when SDPD officers were called to an apartment by a woman who said her ex-boyfriend had threatened her with a gun, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said. When officers arrived, the man drove with his baby to the Orange Line’s 47th Street Trolley Station and then to a nearby parking lot.

The man was found in the bushes with the child. After he was ordered to come out, at least one officer fired a bullet at the man, hitting him at least once, Lt. Mike Krugh of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. Few details have been revealed about the exact moments before and during filming.

The man was taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery, Krugh said. He is expected to survive and face charges of domestic violence and other crimes.

The girl, who was less than a year old, was unharmed and returned home, he said. Her mother was also uninjured.

SDSO investigators found a firearm at the scene and expected to find more.

The Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting under a memorandum of understanding that prevents law enforcement from investigating officer-involved incidents on their own.

Part of the investigation will examine why the officer opened fire while a child was so close, Krugh said. SDSO homicide investigators collected evidence Monday morning.
