UW running back charged with two counts of rape while on football team

A University of Washington running back accused of raping two women has resigned from the team.

Rogers was suspended one game during the 2023 season under former head coach Kalen DeBoer. One of the women reported the alleged assault to the university’s Title IX office, and Rogers was removed from the roster for the Pac-12 championship game just days later. However, he was allowed to play in the College Football Playoff.

In April, Rogers pleaded not guilty to one count of second-degree rape and one count of third-degree rape. Second-degree rape usually occurs when there is forced coercion or when the victim is physically helpless or mentally disabled. Third-degree rape is often a “date rape” in which the victim did not consent to sexual intercourse and “the lack of consent was clearly demonstrated by the victim’s words or behavior,” according to Seattle police.

Rogers’ trial is scheduled to begin in July.
