Sexual assault against Mama Hooch: The police receive new reports

Police have received three new complaints relating to historic incidents at the notorious Mama Hooch bar in Christchurch.

During their time running the bar, brothers Danny and Roberto Jaz were found to have raped and sexually abused numerous women, spiked the women’s drinks and filmed them without their consent.

The two both held leadership positions at the bar and used their roles to exploit young women. Customers and waitresses were targeted.

It was proven in court that they drugged and sexually abused 17 women between 2015 and 2018.

The brothers were convicted last year on 69 counts, including rape, sexual assault, indecent assault, drugging, obstruction, making intimate photographs of women without their knowledge or consent and supplying illegal drugs.

Police confirmed this morning that they had received three additional complaints “related to historical incidents at Mama Hooch” since the Operation Sinatra trial last year.

“Police will not comment on the details of the complaints at this time, however we can confirm that police are continuing to investigate,” a police statement said.
