The sister of a teenager fatally shot by a Bridgeport police officer continues to demand justice seven years later

The sister of a 15-year-old fatally shot by a Bridgeport police officer continued to demand justice as Saturday marks the seventh anniversary of his death.

Bridgeport City Councilwoman Jazmarie Melendez spoke beneath the giant billboard her family erected on Washington Avenue in memory of Jayson Negron.

Negron was shot by a police officer in 2017 as the teenager was driving a stolen car.

The officer was cleared of wrongdoing.

However, Melendez says accountability still exists.

β€œIt is still extremely difficult. I know that by taking the City Council seat, I have become something of a social justice voice in our community. But I still feel like we haven’t seen the change that we need, and that’s what we did.” I didn’t see justice for a lot of people, not just Jayson, but for a lot of people affected by police violence were,” Melendez said.

Bridgeport officials paid her family a settlement to end a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city.
