A two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon in rural Buchanan County resulted in the death of one of the drivers. According to the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call came in about a crash at the intersection of 130th Street and Indiana Avenue Saturday afternoon at approximately 12:25 p.m. According to the investigation, a 2000 Buick LeSabre, driven by 80-year-old Michael John Puff of Oelwein, was traveling eastbound on 130th Street. At the same time, a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by 19-year-old Connor Scott Jorgensen of Oelwein, was traveling northbound on Indiana Avenue. Both vehicles entered the intersection at the same time and collided. Visibility may have been obscured by standing corn bushes near the intersection. Puff’s vehicle came to a stop on the east shoulder of Indiana Avenue just north of the intersection. Jorgensen’s vehicle entered the northeast ditch, overturned and came to rest upside down. Puff, who was not wearing a seat belt, was mechanically extricated from his vehicle and transported to MercyOne Hospital in Oelwein, where he later died. Jorgensen suffered minor injuries. The accident remains under investigation and the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Buchanan County Sheriff’s Rescue 10, Iowa State Patrol, Hazleton Fire Department and Oelwein MercyOne Ambulance Service.
