There is a viral video claiming Cooper died in Interstellar and I have some thoughts on that

Some may argue about whether Interstellar is one of the best science fiction movies of the recent past, but I am not one of them. I fully agree that the film by screenwriter and director Christopher Nolan Is a picture that deserves that award; thanks to its carefully crafted vision of space and time travel. So when I saw a viral video claiming once again that Matthew McConaughey’s Cooper was actually dead all along, it inspired some very pointed thoughts.

The latest “Cooper is dead” theory for Interstellar

The video below, shared by a Twitter user named “JaredFPS,” is making the rounds on social media. A huge Interstellar The creator is a fan himself and believes he has come across compelling evidence that he believes supports the “Cooper is dead” theory better than TARS’ comedic performance. Before I start my own counter-argument against the theory we are playing with here, I have to say that I give JaredFPS a gigantic Kudos: He provides evidence to support his claims. Plus, he’s a huge fan who’s obviously seen the movie many times, so he’s not just a casual internet reactionary seeing it for the first time.

With an argument that relies heavily on allegedly repeated footage and bits of dialogue meant to portray Matthew McConaughey’s journey into space as an afterlife odyssey, there is a lot of support from the actual film itself. At the same time, this is Interstellar The theory doesn’t quite work for me.

And while I reserve the right to pester management to allow me to write a detailed article that allows me to delve into the evidence the Tesseract contains that I believe could disprove it, I’ll keep it brief. I’ll also say that if you want to look through another “Cooper is dead” argument, our own Sean O’Connell delved into that line of thought back when the image was first released.

Why I don’t agree with this Cooper theory… at the moment

The totality Interstellar falls apart if you buy into any kind of “Cooper died in the accident” theory. If Matthew McConaughey goes through the afterlife and all this is just a ghostly fantasy, then this movie has no meaning. And that is surely not the kind of film that is included in the collected Filmography of Christopher Nolan.

This is in addition to co-author Jonathan Nolan’s alternative final commentsin which it was said that Cooper had almost did die in the movie, but during his journey into the black hole Gargantua to go back in time. I don’t think Cooper was such a valuable character that he could not die, but killing him at the beginning of the movie invalidates everything after that point.

In my opinion, it’s just too much of a supernatural concept for Christopher and Jonathan Nolan to ever think of playing with it. The Nolan brothers are science fiction geeks and history buffs who like to play with time and perception, but don’t cross the veil between the living and the dead.

So if Interstellar was actually a giant odyssey into the afterlife, the hard work of the characters trying to save planet Earth is null and void; and that’s the last thing Christopher or Jonathan Nolan want to convey in a film like this. Considering that this is also Nolan’s most emotional film, as well as one of his most scientifically constructed, its sophisticated nature doesn’t lend itself to being dismissed as a ghost story.

My attempt to expand on this theory Interstellar is not meant to discourage anyone who believes that this kind of concept is accurate. Just as in the field of scientific thought, we need to challenge each other’s theories in order to develop them further. And I have to say, I don’t feel confident enough to give up on this topic completely any time soon.

As you will see in my Start End Section, a Nolan script can hold a lot of context that we don’t see on the screen. It’s important to admit when you can’t completely disprove a theory, and I have to give credit to JaredFPS for putting together something that I can’t just throw away without a lot the research.
