Rape: 75-year-old man sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping a minor | News from Coimbatore

Coimbatore: The special court for trying cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act on Friday sentenced a 75-year-old man to 20 years of imprisonment for raping a Class 7 student in 2019. According to a court source, the convict hailed from a village near Ramanathapuram. “The minor girl was playing outside on November 1, 2019, when he forcibly took her to his house and raped her. He also threatened to kill her parents if she told anyone about the incident.” Meanwhile, the minor girl started having severe stomach pain and told her mother about the incident, the source said. The girl’s mother filed a complaint with the Ramanathapuram police on February 4, 2020. The police registered a case against the elderly man under Section 5(l)(m) read with 6 of the Pocso Act, Section 376(AB) and 506(ii) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 3(1)(w)(i) and 3(e)(v) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and arrested him. He was subsequently remanded in judicial custody. The trial was held before a special court. Special Public Prosecutor Rasheetha appeared for the rape victim. Justice G. Kulasekaran pronounced the verdict on Friday evening and sentenced the elderly man to 20 years of imprisonment. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict and directed the state government to provide Rs 500,000 to the rape victim from the Victims Compensation Fund.
