Investigations continue after five wagons derailed

There have been at least 40 derailments in South Carolina over the past three years, including one in Anderson County that remains under investigation. Aerial footage showed five train cars derailed Thursday morning near the town of Belton. Officials with the Greenville and Western Railway said three of the cars were loaded with ethanol. Two of those cars overturned. They also said two cars loaded with wood pulp also derailed in the incident. “They will begin unloading the product that was in there. There is no concern that anything may have spilled or leaked,” said Cade Treffeisen, deputy director of Anderson County Emergency Management. Steven Hawkins, CEO and president of the railroad, released a statement saying in part, “The incident remains under investigation and we are working with both the FRA and SCORS to determine the cause and complete all mandatory reporting requirements, as well as monitor track repairs.”Data from the Federal Railroad Administration shows that Greenville and Western Railway has had no derailments in the past three years.Officials said trains in Anderson County travel slowly. “They travel at less than 20 miles per hour, usually around 5 miles per hour,” Treffeisen said.Data shows that Anderson County has had no derailments since 2021, when there were two in the county. In the Upstate, there were five derailments in 2022, but those occurred in Greenville and Spartanburg counties. “Most derailments happen in rail yards, so there aren’t that many in a year that are really big events that disrupt things in a community,” said Andrew Pyle, a crisis communications professor at Clemson University. County officials said they are prepared for anything that can happen. “We can go to an actual rail car, learn about the different attachments and such to unload that product or identify potential weak spots,” Treffeisen said. Late Friday afternoon, crews could be seen continuing to repair the tracks where the derailment occurred. No official cause for the derailment has been announced.
