Manchester United is under investigation by FIFA over a transfer decision involving Australian prodigy James Overy

Manchester United are reportedly struggling to sign Australian prodigy James Overy. According to The Sun, the Red Devils have already offered the 17-year-old talent a contract. However, due to certain violations, the transfer is currently under investigation by both FIFA and the Premier League.

Earlier this year, Overy moved to amateur club Newton Abbot Spurs in March. FIFA rules prevented him from signing a contract with another club within 16 weeks as this would be considered a “bridging transfer”. As the team coached by Erik ten Hag tried to sign Overy within the stated deadline, the agreement was delayed.

Other Premier League clubs, including Everton and West Ham, had previously tried to sign James Overy. However, Manchester United did not show interest until the player was in the country. The aforementioned report also claimed that the Red Devils had no history with the player prior to his trial. Club officials are now hoping that the 17-year-old will be allowed to sign with them with FIFA’s approval. However, a transfer is unlikely to be finalized until the minor details are sorted out.

James Overy previously played for Perth Glory’s Under-21 team before moving to England with his family from Down Under. The Overy family reportedly found a house in a Cheshire suburb popular with top players. With the young defender already choosing Old Trafford as his next destination, there is no point for West Ham to continue monitoring Overy’s situation.

James Overy is not the only wonderkid on Manchester United’s radar. They recently expressed interest in a deal with Arsenal for their youngster Chido Obi-Martin. The Athletic have published a report claiming that Manchester United are “exploring” the possibility of signing the 16-year-old. The move was sought after his time at Arsenal came to an end. He had already received an offer from the Gunners, which the 16-year-old turned down. The young Danish star then visited Manchester United’s Carrington training ground earlier last week. At the time, it was said that the two parties were discussing a move, but no concrete decision had been made.

Manchester United recently played two pre-season friendlies in Norway and Scotland. They lost the first game 1-0 to Rosenborg before beating Rangers 2-0 in the next. Erik ten Hag’s side now travel to the USA where they will face their Premier League rivals Liverpool and Arsenal, as well as La Liga side Real Betis.
