NJ Transit and Amtrak suspend service between NYC and NJ due to downed lines

Commuters wait for an Amtrak train in the Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station in New York, U.S., on Tuesday, June 18, 2024. New Jersey Transit and Amtrak train service faced significant delays Tuesday following flooding in and out of New York’s Pennsylvania Station.

According to officials, NJ Transit and Amtrak train service between New York City and Metropark in New Jersey has been suspended due to fallen overhead wires.

“Crews are en route and are expected to arrive in 1 hour. We sincerely thank you for your patience,” Amtrak said at 4:39 p.m. on X.

NJ Transit said rail service between the International Airport and Metro Park and the North Jersey Coast Line between New York and Woodbridge was suspended due to problems with the Amtrak overhead line near Rahway.

Amtrak said this “could potentially impact all service between Philadelphia 30th Street (PHL) and New York (NYP) due to the resulting rail congestion.”

NJ Transit announced that rail tickets and passes will be accepted on the system’s buses and those of private transit companies.

Amtrak is also waiving additional fees for customers who wish to change their reservations during the revised schedule. To make changes, call 1-800-USA-RAIL.

Previously, NJ Transit announced last Thursday that several trains would not run due to “heat-related issues with rail equipment.”

In June, power outages and overhead line problems caused by extreme heat resulted in several days of service interruptions and significant delays.

Last Tuesday, the agency even advised its customers to “cancel or combine selected trips for the next 48 to 72 hours.”
