Jefferson’s newest cop hails from Carroll | Raccoon Valley Radio

Trevor Hansen

The Jefferson Police Department recently hired its seventh officer.

Trevor Hansen was confirmed as the new police officer at the June 25 City Council meeting. The 2022 Carroll High School graduate also holds an associate degree in criminal justice from Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny and most recently worked for 1.5 years as a jailer at the Polk County Jail. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that one of the main reasons he pursued a career in law enforcement was growing up with domestic violence. Hansen explains why he chose Jefferson as a police officer.

“But what really drove me here was the small-town atmosphere, the opportunity to get to know certain people over and over again and see what kind of relationships we can build here. Over at the Polk County Jail, there was a constant influx of people. You never see them again or you see them countless times. But here, we can take it slower and try to build good relationships and see what we can do for the people here.”

Since starting on July 8, Hansen has emphasized the welcoming atmosphere he has experienced among fellow officers and staff at the Greene County Sheriff’s Office and shares what he is most looking forward to as he begins his law enforcement career in Jefferson.

“I’m excited about what I can do, how I can make a difference in people’s lives, how I can just have a positive impact on the community and maintain the relationships. I’m looking forward to that.”

Hansen’s starting salary is $60,341, and because he has a degree in criminal justice, he will attend the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy’s short, 10-week academy in January.
