At least 29 people were killed in Peru when a bus traveling from the capital Lima to the southern city of Ayacucho plunged more than 200 meters into a ravine on Tuesday, authorities said.

Search and rescue operations are underway, the country’s Interior Ministry said on X, adding that 13 people were injured.

The incident occurred around 5 a.m. local time and the cause is unknown, authorities said.

All injured people are being treated in nearby hospitals.

There have been several fatal accidents on Peru’s mountain roads in recent years.

In April 2021, a bus accident occurred in the Peruvian department of Áncash, about 450 kilometers from Lima, in which 20 people died and 14 were injured.

In February 2022, another 20 people died and 33 were injured when a bus derailed and fell into a 100-meter-deep ravine in the Pataz province of northern Peru.
