“One of the most overrated players in the NFL”

While many NFL executives believe Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is one of the best in the league, one believes he is one of the most “overrated” players in the game.

The Buffalo Bills are just days away from opening training camp for a pivotal season under head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane. Failure to reach at least the AFC Championship Game this season will likely result in both being relieved of their duties.

However, the pressure is also on QB Josh Allen. The two-time Pro Bowler is one of the most exciting players in the game, but when it comes to the playoffs, he has helped his team advance past the divisional round once in five straight playoff appearances.

While he’s garnered votes for the greatest player in history in recent years, his style of play has also drawn plenty of detractors. And one of those detractors lashed out on Monday ESPN NFL executives poll of the top 10 QBs in today’s games.

“One of the most overrated players in the NFL,” a veteran executive told the outlet. “He’s a huge talent but makes a lot of mistakes. He’s not developed enough to win at the line of scrimmage, tends to lock down targets, is more of a thrower than a passer, forces throws in traffic.”

A rival executive delivered mixed reviews of the 28-year-old face of the Buffalo Bills franchise.

“He leaves you wanting more,” the general manager said. “But if you’re going to pick who you want to have at the helm of your team, he’s going to be second or third for most people. The ceiling is still very high. And I don’t really think he’s the reason the Bills haven’t been able to finish.”

However, it wasn’t all bad, as a “senior NFL official” told ESPN: Over the course of Allen’s career, they’ve “seen a quarterback who is consistently a top player who elevates his team at every opportunity.”

Buffalo Bills training camp for the 2024 NFL season officially opens on July 24.
