Threatened by police and accused, rape victim and father end their lives | News from India

AJMER: A 16-year-old rape victim and her 54-year-old father committed suicide in Rajasthan’s Nagaur district on Tuesday morning. In her suicide note, the minor wrote that her rapist’s accomplices came to her house on Sunday evening and threatened to kill her, but the local police took no action against them and instead threatened her and her family.

Villagers found father and daughter dead in their house and informed police. The bodies were sent to a government hospital for postmortem. Nagaur SP Narayan Togas suspended Khatu police station SHO Radha Kishan Meena for failing to ensure the safety of the rape victim and handed over the probe into lapses in investigation of the Pocso case and the role of policemen to a probationary IPS officer. The girl, who was abducted and raped on June 13, had named two persons – Motiram and Mangilal – in her police complaint, based on which a case was registered under the Pocso Act on June 14.

The girl’s cousin told TOI that Motiram raped the girl before releasing her. After a complaint was filed, the SHO and the accused started threatening the family to withdraw the complaint, he said. Motiram was then arrested but Mangilal came to his uncle’s house and threatened to kill the girl and her father. “That is the reason why my cousin and uncle took this extreme step,” he added. The SP said after the complaint was filed, the police recorded the girl’s statement under Section 164 of the CrPC and are also looking for the absconding accused named by the survivor in her complaint. He, however, admitted that there were lapses in the investigation of the Pocso case.
