SEATTLE: The situation at Delhi airport has suddenly taken a dramatic turn for the worse for passengers, just when it was expected to improve exponentially. Following the collapse of the canopy at T1, which resulted in the unfortunate death of a person, the operations of the terminal have been suspended indefinitely. Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) says all IndiGo arrivals and departures from T1 will be shifted to T2 and T3. And SpiceJet flights from T1 will be shifted to T3.

The interruption of operations at T1 comes at a time when the expanded terminal is due to reopen after a long wait. After Friday’s mishap, it remains to be seen when this will happen.

With schools in Delhi and NCR reopening from July 1, passengers can expect chaos this coming last weekend of the summer holidays and peak travel season.

India’s largest airline IndiGo said this has led to disruptions to its flights. “This has resulted in flight cancellations in Delhi as passengers are unable to enter the terminal. Passengers already in the terminal will be able to board their scheduled flights but those flying later in the day will be offered alternatives. This unplanned situation has also led to disruptions in operations across the network. Customers are advised to track and confirm the status of their flight before heading to the airport,” IndiGo said in a statement.

Airlines will obviously do everything they can to shift their operations. While cash-strapped SpiceJet is operating only a fraction of its flight schedule, India’s largest airline IndiGo is facing the Herculean task of distributing T1 flights between T2 and T3.

In view of the likely disruption, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation has advised airlines to “rebook passengers on alternative flights or provide full refund as per regulations” as a large number of flights have been cancelled following the suspension of operations at Terminal 1 at Delhi airport. The Aviation Ministry said that “flights to and from Terminal 1 have been suspended until further notice” as the roof has collapsed.

Indian Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu inspected T1 and discussed the situation with officials. “We are taking this incident seriously… I want to clarify that the building inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on the other side and the building that collapsed here is an old building which was inaugurated in 2009,” Naidu said. The minister announced compensation to the family of the deceased and also to those injured in the collapse. He announced compensation to the family of the deceased and to those injured in the accident on Friday. Naidu also visited the hospital to meet the injured.
