Tributes are being paid to former Celtic midfielder Landry Nguemo, who died in a tragic car crash in Cameroon at the age of 38.

Nguemo, a defensive midfielder, spent the 2009/10 season on loan at Celtic from French club Nancy, playing under managers Tony Mowbray and Neil Lennon. The 41-times capped Cameroonian international and wearing the No.6 shirt, made a total of 43 appearances.

After Celtic reportedly failed to agree a deal with Nancy to sign him permanently, Nguemo returned to his parent club at the end of the Scottish season. Nguemo then spent a further year at Nancy before signing for Ligue 1 rivals Bordeaux.

After a three-year stint in the south of France, Nguemo played for Saint-Etienne and two Turkish clubs, Akhisar Belediyespor and Kayserispor, before ending his career at Norwegian club Kongsvinger. He died on Thursday, Cameroon football chiefs announced in a statement.

“The Cameroon Football Federation has just received the tragic news of the death of former Indomitable Lion Landry Nguemo in a road accident. A key player for the Cameroon national team from 2006 to 2014 and a former member of the Girondins de Bordeaux, Nguemo will be remembered for his services to football.

“FECAFOOT extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends and the entire football community.”

Celtic added in their own statement: “Everyone at Celtic Football Club is shocked and saddened by the news of Landry N’Guemo’s passing at the young age of 38. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic Football Club are with Landry’s family and friends at this sad time.”

Nguemo won the French League Cup with Nancy in 2006. Spotted by talent scouts, he moved to France at the age of 15 after coming through the club’s academy. He was then part of the Cameroon team that finished runners-up in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations final, losing 1-0 to Egypt.
