Man stabs several people in ‘unprovoked’ attacks on buses in Las Vegas: police

Incident on two buses leads to charges of attempted murder, according to files

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man allegedly stabbed several people on two different buses in a series of attacks that police describe as random and unprovoked, investigators told 8 News Now.

According to the files, 26-year-old Devinski Tunggadewa is accused of multiple counts of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

According to the documents, Tunggadewa stabbed a man on a bus on June 21 and then stabbed two men on another bus before beating a casino employee.

In the first incident, Tunggadewa allegedly stabbed a man visiting from California about 25 times on a bus near Casino Center Boulevard and Carson Avenue. The man told police he believed Tunggadewa stabbed him 8-10 times and told his wife, with whom he was traveling, that he loved her because he thought he was going to die, documents say.

A witness to the stabbing told police that Tunggadewa was sitting alone and appeared to be talking to himself, the documents say. At one point, Tunggadewa looked the stabbing victim in the eyes and said, “If you look me in the eyes, I’m going to wake you up,” the documents say. He then chased a woman all the way across the bus before running away, police said.

During the second series of stabbings on a second bus, which occurred on Fremont Street near 10th Street, Tunggadewa allegedly became angry when a passenger noticed Tunggadewa spitting on the ground, the documents say. Tunggadewa allegedly stabbed two people on that bus, including in the victims’ faces.

Tunggadewa is then said to have approached an employee of the Circa Resort & Casino as he was about to enter a cocktail bar. The employee noticed that Tunggadewa’s hands were covered in blood. Tunggadewa is said to have then punched the employee in the head and run away.

Officers later found Tunggadewa wandering around the area with a utility knife in his hand, police said.

“It is important to note that all of these attacks were completely and astonishingly unprovoked,” police said in court documents. “From the video, it appears Tunggadewa was intentionally seeking out altercations with strangers to carry out these attacks. Tunggadewa had several opportunities to leave the area after the first stabbing attack, but instead, in a second and third incident, he attacked three more victims in a heinous manner by brutally stabbing them repeatedly.”

On Tuesday, Judge Nadia Wood set bail at $1 million in Las Vegas court. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for July 9.

Last week, RTC announced it would be the first transportation agency to fully deploy artificial intelligence for weapons detection in its system.

Following several high-profile violent crimes last year, including a murder on the bus, RTC hired additional security personnel.
