Bloom Trail teacher charged with sexually abusing former student

STEGER, Illinois – A Bloom Trail High School teacher has been charged with sexually abusing a former student.

Ron Giglio, 49, of Cedar Lake, is charged with two counts of child enticement after he was taken into custody last week in northwest Indiana.

Giglio is currently a teacher at Bloom Trail High School and the charges stem from the alleged sexual abuse of an underage student, his former student, between 2000 and 2002.

According to court documents, Giglio and the unnamed girl had sexual intercourse when she was a minor. The sexual relationship lasted for years, the documents say.

In April of this year, the woman recorded a conversation between Giglio and her. According to the documents, the 49-year-old said she was going to “ruin his life” and that he would lose his job.

“Stop being so innocent… you were just as involved as I was,” Giglio is said to have told the girl.

He then allegedly admitted that he was wrong.

A detective researched the statute of limitations in Indiana and found that an exception to the usual time limits can be made based on the recording.

He was released from Lake County Jail on Friday on $1,000 bail – the required 10 percent of his $10,000 bail.

Giglio was the subject of a meeting the district called in May following a civil lawsuit. The district’s school board listened to anyone who wanted to speak but did not take questions from the public.

A Bloom Trail University graduate told WGN News that Giglio allegedly called her pet names: “He shouldn’t do that to teenage girls.”

The district said in a statement that the district’s internal investigation had “nothing to do with” the previous lawsuit.

“Ron Giglio has been on administrative leave since May 14, 2024, when the District was served with the Jane Doe complaint. Since then, the District, with the assistance of the District Attorney, has been conducting its internal investigation, which is ongoing. This investigation is unrelated to Giglio’s arrest in Indiana.”

Giglio’s first hearing is scheduled for July 8.
