IGP suspends three prison guards

Officials allegedly equipped prisoner with recording device

RAWALPINDI:

Three guards were suspended and others were issued summons demanding that they give an inmate in Gujarat District Jail access to a recording device.

After a viral video showing the torture of an inmate in Gujarat jail went public, an investigation was launched into the case. It was found that the video was staged. The inmate, a convicted murderer, had recorded the video of his own torture to frame the prison guards for wrongdoing and to blackmail them.

After the video went viral, Punjab IG Prisons, Mian Farooq Nazir, took notice and ordered an investigation. The investigation also revealed that several members of the prison administration were responsible for the prisoner getting his hands on a pen-like recording device with which he recorded the video.

Subsequently, three jail guards, Muhammad Nazir, Farrukh Amin and Adnan Khan, were suspended for providing the recording device to the inmate. Two senior wardens and the deputy superintendent were issued notices to comment, while the superintendent and deputy superintendent of Gujarat Jail were asked to provide explanations.

In addition, according to the findings of the investigation, on the statement of the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Civil Lines Gujarat, charges were filed against inmate Zaheeruddin Babar and his accomplice, fellow inmate Akmal Hussain.

The Punjab IG Prisons commented: “Prisoner Zaheeruddin possessed a very cunning and conspiratorial mind.

He was transferred between eight different prisons for violating prison rules 18 times.”
