BERLIN – Berlin’s Economics Senator Franziska Giffey is the latest victim of a series of violent attacks on politicians in Germany. A suspected man was temporarily arrested on Wednesday.

While visiting a library in the German capital on Tuesday, Giffey was injured in the head and neck by an “attack from behind with a bag filled with hard contents,” the Berlin public prosecutor’s office said.

After a short treatment in the hospital, Giffey continued her appointments under personal protection. The attack could not be justified, said the politician and expressed concern about violence against politically active people.

Attacks on politicians in Germany have increased. There have been several attacks on politicians in recent days, including a candidate for the upcoming European elections who suffered facial fractures.

The interior ministers of the federal states met on Tuesday to discuss measures.

On Sunday, thousands of people gathered across the country to condemn attacks on politicians, particularly in Dresden and Berlin.
