Long-time sailor on “Deadliest Catch” dies at 59

Nick Mavar Jr., a deckhand on the F/V Northwestern who appeared on the series “Deadliest Catch” for 15 years, has died.

He was 59 years old.

Mavar died Thursday in Naknek, Alaska, from complications of a medical emergency, Bristol Bay Borough Police Chief Jeff Elbie told USA TODAY on Friday. The longtime fisherman, whose real name was Nickola Mavar Jr., was pronounced dead after being taken to a medical facility, according to Elbie.

USA TODAY has contacted representatives from F/V Northwestern and Discovery for comment.
