Pastor of Virginia Beach church fired after sexual abuse investigation – The Virginian-Pilot

A Virginia Beach priest was fired from the Catholic Diocese of Richmond after cases of abuse occurred at a church school.

In May, the diocese released a statement regarding allegations of sexual abuse of students at St. John the Apostle School by an adult who has since died. Officials also investigated whether the diocese’s Safe Environment regulations and other policies were being properly followed. Father Rob Cole was subsequently placed on leave.

The diocese announced its decision today to remove Cole from his position.

“Bishop Knestout believes that St. John the Apostle Parish would benefit from new pastoral leadership,” the statement said. “Rev. Rob Cole will no longer serve as pastor effective June 12, 2024. Bishop Knestout appreciates Rev. Cole’s dedication and service as pastor of this parish for more than 15 years. While this decision and transition will be difficult, the Bishop appreciates the patience and support of the parish.”

Until a new pastor is appointed, the Rev. Esteban De Leon, VF, pastor of Star of the Sea Catholic Church, will serve as interim administrator.
