Couple arrested after toddler dies of oxycodone overdose in their care: PCSO

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), a couple was arrested after a baby in their care died of a drug overdose.

The incident occurred March 9 at a Largo residence after a 17-month-old baby was found unconscious in his playpen. The baby was pronounced dead at the scene, officials say.

When officers investigated the crime scene, they said they found oxycodone and Xanax in the bedroom.

Officers interviewed the accused couple, Adela and Kyle Allen, both 43. The sheriff’s office said Adela’s statements were contradictory, while Kyle told investigators he was at work when the incident occurred.

Deputies stated that upon further investigation, it was determined that the baby’s cause of death was oxycodone poisoning and that none of the household members had a prescription for it.

Kyle and Adela were interviewed again on June 7. Officers said Kyle admitted to selling narcotics that Adela gave him. However, Kyle also denied knowing the drugs were in the house when the baby died, according to the sheriff’s office.

According to PCSO, Adela’s statements continued to be contradictory and she said she did not know the child would die from oxycodone.

Adela was arrested for possession of hydromorphone, possession of morphine, possession of acetaminophen and hydrocodone, possession of alprazolam, possession of diazepam, possession of oxycodone, possession of methadone and possession of clonazepam.

Kyle was arrested for unauthorized use of a two-way communication device.

Both were taken to the Pinellas County Jail without incident. The investigation is ongoing, officials say.
