I-495 NB closed Monday morning due to fatal accident – ​​First update from the state

On Monday morning, emergency crews were called to a serious traffic accident on I-495 northbound, north of Cauffiel Parkway in Wilmington. The accident involved a semi-truck and a car, trapping several patients.

Upon arrival, crews from the Claymont and Brandywine Hundred Fire Companies and New Castle County paramedics reported that individuals were trapped in both vehicles. Due to the severity of the situation, an additional team of paramedics was requested to assist.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) also responded to the scene to handle hazardous materials cleanup since the tractor-trailer was carrying large quantities of fuel.

A patient from the vehicle was taken to a trauma center for treatment of his injuries. The driver of the semi-trailer that overturned in the accident was pronounced dead at the scene.

I-495 northbound remains closed while the investigation continues and HAZMAT crews work to clean up the site. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
